Grodno Drama Theatre: a landmark worth seeing even without a ticket
From Gosteam to the Grodno Regional Drama Theatre it is 233 metres. Why stop at 35 Mostovaya Street, and how to continue the walk through the centre from there.

On Mostovaya, between the hostel and the Neman, stands a building that does not fit the usual picture of an “old European town”. It is the Grodno Regional Drama Theatre.
It looks as if a piece of modern architecture was set on the high bank of the Neman — and landed in the very middle of historic Grodno.
From Gosteam at 31 Mostovaya Street to the theatre it is 233 metres. Three minutes on foot.
The building opened on 31 March 1984. The design is by architect Gennady Machulsky, Giprotheatre institute. It is a clear example of Soviet modernism: almost none of the usual theatre front with columns and stucco.
Instead there are large concrete volumes, vertical windows, sharp lines and a geometry that opens toward the city and the river.
The theatre is especially striking from the square: fountains, open space and the view of the Neman make one of Grodno’s most recognisable cityscapes.
That is why it is worth coming even if you are not going to a performance.
The main detail of the façade is easy to miss from a distance. Above the entrance stands the three-figure composition “Pegasus and the Muses” (also called “Pegasus, the poet and the muse”). Sculptor Leonid Zilber, installed in 1987 — three years after the building opened.
The heavy concrete façade and the swift sculpture work together: from below the group looks different than in photos from the square.
Come closer and look up.

The hostel is at 31 Mostovaya. The theatre is a few houses on, at 35 Mostovaya.
This is one of those places you do not need a separate trip for: walk out of the hostel — and three minutes later you are at the theatre.
After the drama theatre you do not need to go back to Soviet Square. It is more interesting to continue toward the castles and the old centre.
Our walking loop:
Gosteam → drama theatre → New Castle → Old Castle → fire tower → Great Choral Synagogue → back to Gosteam
First you see 20th-century Grodno — the unusual architecture of the theatre. Then royal Grodno at the New Castle. Next the Old Castle and the Middle Ages. Then one of the city’s most recognisable verticals — the fire tower. And another page of history — the Great Choral Synagogue.
The result is a loop through several eras. On Yandex Maps it is about 1.9 km and 24 minutes on foot, with two flights of stairs.

Walking loop from Gosteam: the theatre, New and Old Castles, the fire tower and the synagogue. Yandex Maps — about 1.9 km, 24 minutes.
Grodno is interesting not for one “main” sight, but for contrast. You can start at a 1980s building, a few minutes later stand by the royal castles and finish at the synagogue — all on foot in the centre.
If you stay at Gosteam, you do not have to drive between these points. Just go out and walk.
New Castle. A former residence of Polish kings and Grand Dukes of Lithuania. A convenient next stop after the theatre.
Old Castle. Grodno’s main historic symbol. Castle Hill is tied to the city from the Middle Ages.
Fire tower. One of the most recognisable verticals in town and a good photo stop.
Great Choral Synagogue. One of the most important monuments of Grodno’s Jewish heritage — another page of the same walk.
The Grodno Drama Theatre is not an ancient castle and not a medieval church. That is its value: it shows another Grodno — a 20th-century city of bold architecture.
And because of the Mostovaya address it slips easily into a walk through the historic centre.
